So, I woke up this morning in 2026 to the kind of Genshin Impact news that makes me check my phone's spec sheet before I have even had coffee. Version 7.0 is on the way, and while that should be pure hype, it also comes with a compatibility shake-up for Android players. If you are like me and you have been running Teyvat on a phone that has seen better days, this one hits different.
Since its release back in 2020, Genshin Impact has completely revolutionized the gacha genre. HoYoverse's anime-style open-world game mixes a core main story, an action-focused battle system, and gacha elements. We use real currency, or grind in-game currency, to gamble on characters and weapons that can turn the tide in battle. And hey, who does not love a gamble every now and again?

Genshin went on to inspire the likes of Honkai: Star Rail and, more recently, Wuthering Waves. It has been at the head of the gacha genre for years, and its popularity shows no signs of dwindling. But a recent announcement could lead to the beloved game becoming unplayable for millions. That is not doomposting. That is literally what the new Android compatibility requirements say.
Version 7.0 is a big update. It is set to introduce updated visuals, including updated character models, enhanced environment textures, and improved visual effects. Better visuals are great, but they also mean higher performance demands. Luckily, the specifications for PC, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox, and most Android devices will stay the same. However, a small number of users who still use older Android devices may be affected due to limitations caused by certain GPU architectures. If your Android uses Mali-G52 MP2, Mali-G57 MP, Imagination BXM, or older PowerVR, you may experience crashes, black screens, freezing, and other technical issues after the update to Version 7.0.

So, how do you know if you are safe? HoYoverse released the new Android compatibility requirements, and they are pretty clear. Here is the quick version:
| Requirement | Supported | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Android version | Android 10 or later | Android 12 or later |
| Chipset | Snapdragon 660 / Helio G88 or above | Snapdragon 855 / Dimensity 1000 / Kirin 980 or above |
| RAM | 4GB | 6GB |
If you are below the supported line, you are in the danger zone. If you are below the recommended line but above supported, you will probably still run the game, but I would not expect a flawless experience. Is that fair? Not really. Is it the reality of live-service games? Unfortunately, yes.
I have already started checking my own devices. On most Android phones, you can find your chipset and RAM under Settings > About phone. If you are not sure, there are apps that can show your hardware details, but I would rather not send you down a rabbit hole. The important thing is to check before 7.0 drops. You do not want to find out your phone is unsupported when you are trying to pull for a new character.

Adding a whole new region and brand-new characters, Genshin Impact 7.0 will be a big update for fans. The Snezhnaya imagery alone has me hyped. However, at the time of writing, HoYoverse has not confirmed a release date. That is actually good news for anyone with an older Android phone. It gives you plenty of time to work out if your device will be able to support the next major release.
Here is my plan, and maybe it should be yours too:
-
🚨 Check your Android version, chipset, and RAM now.
-
🧊 Back up your account and make sure your login details are safe.
-
💰 If you are on an affected GPU, start budgeting for an upgrade or plan to switch to PC, PlayStation, or Xbox.
-
🎮 Do not wait until the last minute. New phones are not cheap, and stock can be unpredictable.
-
📢 Tell your friends who play on Android. A lot of people do not read patch notes.
Will I be upgrading? Probably. Will I complain about it? Absolutely. Genshin Impact has been a genre-defining game for years, and I still love exploring Teyvat, pulling for new characters, and complaining about artifact rolls. But Version 7.0 is a reminder that live-service games move on, and sometimes they leave older hardware behind.
If your Android is on the edge, check now. The last thing you want is a black screen when Snezhnaya opens.
